According to the publication "Frutti dimenticati e biodiversita recuperata" of march 2012, there exist "three lobed walnut trees" somewhere in Calabria. It is found in the mountainous areas of Calabria around 800 m above sea level, and prefers moist soils located near small streams. It is a large tree, with great vegetative vigor, characterized by an imposing bearing. Compound leaves similar in size to other walnut varieties. Fruit 4-5 cm in diameter, rounded, with a woody endocarp characterized by three slits placed at about 120 degrees from each other. The plants that produce these particular nuts are rarely found, at the moment there is no more detailed information.
