Harvest 2021

It was a bad year for Juglans regia: late frosts delayed the flowering of the male flowers, resulting in fewer nuts. A cold and wet summer leads to many blackened nuts. Afterwards, the parakeets nibbling damaged many of the nearly ripe nuts. I harvested about 3/4 less in 2021 than in 2020. I only found 1 three-lobed nut in the garden, and it didn't germinate. I also found a tree with large nuts, and one of them was a three-lobed nut. I collected nuts from Juglans nigra, Juglans mandshurica, Juglans cinerea, Corylus colurna and stratificated them over the winter. These are for planting nearby during squirrel walks.

Summer 2021

From the harvest off 2020, I germinated and planted many nuts like as Juglans regia, Juglans Nigra, Corylus Colurna and Carya Ovata. Only the following have germinated / survived: - 7 Juglans Regia (from treelobed nuts), - 1 Juglans Nigra, - 2 Carya Ovata, - 3 Corylus Colurna. These will be planted in larger containers later on.

The beginning

Out of 10 planted nuts, already three are growing.

Stupid me

After planting the first nuts the temperature dropped below -10 ° C at night and did not rise above -5 ° C during the day for a week long. I'm afraid I lost the first batch (the rest was still sprouting in the fridge at 4 to 5 ° C).  To date I have planted 8 nuts.

First shoots

Finally the first shoots have appeared, I can start planting them. I chose to use non-woven bags because there is currently not enough space in the garden for a definitive location.

Stratification

I choose this method to germinate: I soaked them for 24 hours, wrapped them in kitchen paper and keep them in the fridge. Now I just have to wait until January.

Folklore

Due to its rarity (the figure of 1/150.000 is mentioned), this nut is believed to bring good luck . More information and photos can be found here . From now on I have one tucked away in the pockets of my pants, maybe it will bring me lots of luck.
